Description
When we say “San Jose Rocks,” we’re not just talking about rock ‘n’ roll—we’re celebrating every genre, every innovation, and one incredible legacy that spans over a century.
This premium t-shirt represents the mission of San Jose Rocks, a nonprofit dedicated to documenting and honoring the comprehensive musical heritage of San Jose and all 15 cities across Santa Clara County. From the world’s first radio broadcast in 1909 to the digital innovations that transformed how we create and share music today, our region has been at the heart of music history.
The front features our distinctive logo—a pixelated sound wave in a vibrant spectrum of colors. But it’s more than just eye-catching design. Those pixels represent the actual sound wave created when community leader Brian Adams exclaimed “San Jose Rocks!” It’s a visual bridge between the analog radio waves that first carried music through the air in 1909 and the digital revolution Silicon Valley brought to the world.
The back showcases the incredible diversity of our region’s contributions: legendary artists like the Grateful Dead, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jefferson Airplane, and Stevie Nicks; groundbreaking innovators like the 1st Radio Station, 1st DJ, Dolby, Ampex, and NVIDIA; genre-defining artists from Los Tigres del Norte to Smash Mouth, Joan Baez to Trapt, Lindsey Buckingham to The Doobie Brothers—and so many more waiting to be discovered at SanJoseRocks.org.
Whether you’re a music lover, a tech enthusiast, or simply proud of our region’s cultural legacy, this shirt tells a story that spans mariachi to metal, classical to hip-hop, and over 100 years of innovation that changed how the world experiences music.
BACKGROUND: THE STORY BEHIND OUR LOGO
Look closely at the San Jose Rocks logo. What do you see?
Your first impression might be a vibrant spectrum of colors—a visual celebration of diversity that hints at our mission to honor every musical genre, from mariachi to metal, from classical to hip-hop. And you’d be right about that.
But there’s something more fundamental happening in those colored squares, something that connects directly to the moment that changed music forever.
THE SOUND THAT STARTED IT ALL
In 1909, right here in San Jose, the world’s first radio broadcasting station went live—what we know today as KCBS. Think about what that meant: for the first time in human history, you didn’t have to be physically present at a performance to experience music. You could hear a symphony in your living room. A jazz quartet in your kitchen. Music, which had always required you to be somewhere, could now be everywhere.
Radio didn’t just broadcast music. It democratized it.
That innovation—turning sound into waves that could travel through the air—was the first of many ways San Jose and Silicon Valley would transform how the world experiences music. Since that first analog radio signal, Silicon Valley minds have migrated the world from analog to digital, turning sound waves into pixels and data.
WHAT YOU’RE REALLY LOOKING AT
Those colored squares form a sound wave—specifically, the sound wave created when San Jose community leader Brian Adams exclaims: “San Jose Rocks!”
San Jose Rocks founder Dan Orloff recorded Brian using Apple’s GarageBand, captured a screen shot of that sound wave, and handed it to creative director and branding guru Mike Bohrer, who transformed it into the pixelated spectrum you see today.
Our logo is literally the sound of our community’s pride, rendered in the digital language Silicon Valley gave to the world.
Every genre. Every innovation. One incredible legacy.
That’s not just our tagline. It’s right there in the sound waves.
